Fall Prevention and Mobility Support
Falls are the leading cause of injuries among people 65 years or older. These injuries often lead to hospitalization, rehabilitation, and in the worst case can lead to a wheelchair. Mobility is an important part of life, the basis of independence. Seniors living at home who experienced a fall or are concerned they are at risk, will often withdraw from activities, choose to settle and immobile. With a shortfall of exercise and activity, this can lead to muscle atrophy and weakness and loss of balance.
ESSENCIA Caregivers are proactive in encouraging mobility and ROM exercises resulting to greater strength and balance thereby promoting healthier lifestyle.
Factors that can increase the risk of falling:
-
Past falls
-
Hazards in the home and community
-
Problems walking
-
Balance problems
-
Weakness
-
Improper footwear
-
Chronic diseases
-
Multiple medications
-
Poor vision
-
Depression
-
Memory problems
-
Behaviors like rushing
Plan of Actions for reducing / prevention of fall risks:
-
Talking with a health professional to identify and treat medical problems that might lead to falls. This includes discussing any previous falls with the doctor, reviewing medications with a doctor or pharmacist, and getting vision checked at least once a year.
-
Getting Regular Physical Activity – making a plan to have regular physical activity either in a class or at home. The most effective types of activities to reduce fall risk improve balance, strength, flexibility, and endurance.
-
Being Aware of Safety Hazards in the Home and Community – this includes looking at the home to identify fall hazards and making changes for safety, also called home modifications such as checking on loose rugs, uneven flooring, electrical cords and even spills can all create fall risk. It is important to keep a clean, well-lit and even walking environment to avoid trip hazards. It may also make sense to install rails particularly in critical areas where falls can be more common, like showers and bathrooms. It is also important not to rush and to be aware of fall risks when outside.
ESSENCIA Caregivers are well versed with the procedures in preventing falls and provide mobility assistance like:
-
Contact Assist
-
Gait Belt use
-
Hoyer Lift or Sit to Stand LIft
-
Stand by Assist
